What people Say about Mazi Ukonu...
Because technology in modern times is the order of the day, people of today may never really appreciate the impact of the name Mazi Ukonu of Ukonu’s Club in Nigerian history, but to me and many Nigerians of my era, particularly east of the Niger River, Ukonu means TV and TV means Ukonu.

The Legendary Entertainer – Mazi Ukonu
My memory of Chief Elekwachi Anayaogu Ukonu otherwise known as Mazi Ukonu goes back to early 1960’s. During that period he was the host of the famous “Ukonu’s Club – Teenagers Playtime” on Saturdays where young adults go to dance and have fun. My family and I always sit together in our living-room to watch his show. In less than a pole away from us, there was a hall where people gather just to watch the same show and that place was always jam packed and very noisy during Ukonu’s Club time. I still remember one of Mazi Ukonu’s famous song such as; “Onye kpo nkita bia chochi, chupu ya, chupu ya…....Mazi Ukonu onye isi chochi anyi.” Mazi Ukonu is not only an entertainer but also a humanitarian.

In retrospect, He came back virtually unannounced. It took us by surprise. I didn’t even appreciate why he had to come back that early, until I visited the United States of America, and saw the US by myself. When I came back from that journey, I asked him (Mazi) “why did you come back?” He said, “It is because of all of you.” I repeatedly asked these questions and he said it is because of all of you.”
Frankly speaking, he became the light of the family. When he came back, most of us found it difficult to go to school someone like myself. He came back at the time that my dad’s business was just falling down and he took up paying my school fees for me and that was how I passed through Secondary School. So like I said, Mazi became the light of the family. He has been a good leader.

I treasure our relationship, a relationship that has crossed years. I am very pleased to have him as my friend. There is absolutely no reason to regret having him as a friend. We do have little difficulties in terms of our attitudes now and again. But firmly, he is an ideal friend.
Then as a Clubman, Mazi has become a leader in this club. That is to say, like it or don’t like it, Mazi is a leader in Aba Club. And he led our own area of the Club so very successfully, so well and he is still very effective. Mazi, at 75+, Mazi will remain someone that everyone wants to listen to when he comes here.
One thing about Mazi is that, if at that age, Mazi’s intellectual capacity is much better than that of some people at 45, we want to find out why he was so gifted.
